Leonard graduated Acadia University in 1986 with a BA and was an Officer in the Royal Canadian Navy for 10 years. Leonard founded Genoa Design International in 1995 and retired in 2022. He possesses a Diploma of Technology in Naval Architecture, a Masters Certificate in Project Management, and is an ICD.D Certified Director.

Leonard serves on the LearnSphere Board and the MusicNL Board, and brings a focus on leadership, entrepreneurship, business development and governance.
