Customized Support Driving Results in NB’s Non-Profits
The pandemic has increased demands on most non-profits, forcing them to find new ways to deliver services and raise funds. A February 2021 report from Imagine Canada showed innovation and experimentation were up sharply in the sector, but most were having to focus on solving immediate challenges rather than investing in organizational capacity and building long-term sustainability.
This is where LearnSphere’s Customized Support for NB Non-Profits* can help. Aiming to improve management capacity and strengthen governance, it is available to all NB-based non-profits and registered charities with an economic or social impact mandate.
Customized support can be used to fund activities such as board governance training, policy reviews, policy development, strategic planning, management or leadership training, and development of communication plans. Approved non-profits access up to five days of customized support, helping them turn their learning investments into long-term impact.
CBDC Charlotte / Kings obtained customized support a few years ago to undertake a collaborative, in-house planning process. The result was an effective strategic plan, created and approved by a board who was actively engaged in the process and committed to using the plan to guide their work:
“The support provided by LearnSphere to create our strategic plan was incredibly valuable. In a facilitated session, their expert Laurie Bourque challenged our board by asking great questions that enabled us to focus beyond the day to day, to our organization’s broader role in economic development. The resulting plan wasn’t just known by our board members, it was owned by them.” - Geoff Knight, Executive Director, CBDC Charlotte/Kings
Greater Dorchester Moving Forward Co-operative took advantage of this customized support at a critical juncture in their organization’s history, and has this to say about their experience:
“We have used the skills, tools, and knowledge gained from the LearnSphere program countless times as an organization. In particular when we need a structured process to make hard decisions. We have a big vision, and thanks to the support from this program we have the capacity to achieve it” – Reg Tower, Chair, Greater Dorchester Moving Forward Co-op
The pandemic has highlighted the many essential services that non-profits provide in our communities. As we look towards brighter days ahead, we are confident that our customized support will continue to support NB organizations to be vibrant, well-governed, and well-managed, building their capacity to provide positive impact in our communities.
*Customized support is a component of our Training for the Non-Profit Sector program. It is funded in part by ACOA NB and the Government of New Brunswick.
